John MacAskill

ABL Group

Managing Director of Renewables

Description

John MacAskill has over 17 years’ experience in renewables, with a focus on offshore wind, and a prior 22 years in engineering, manufacturing and commercial leadership across the marine, oil & gas, and industrial sectors. He currently serves as Group Growth Director for ABL Group and as a director of Group company OWC, where he supports clients and investors across the development, procurement and financing of offshore wind projects globally. John has held senior technical and commercial roles in project certification, consultancy, and foundation fabrication, and has been directly involved in some of the UK and Europe’s most visible offshore wind developments—authoring key inputs for ScotWind bids, leading certification on UK and German offshore wind projects, and supported the early floating wind project at Kincardine. He has also advised developers in Poland, Ireland, US and APAC, and investors in both projects and supply chain companies. Before entering renewables, John’s early career saw him at sea as a marine engineer and later leading Quality and LEAN manufacturing programmes and commercial teams. He has served on sector steering groups, contributed to public policy consultations, and regularly speaks on the challenges and opportunities facing offshore wind—particularly where risk, strategy, finance and supply chain converge.

Description
Ports play a central role in the success of offshore renewable energy projects. Their ability to accommodate, assemble, store, and ship oversized components directly affects the pace and competitiveness of industrial deployment. As European ambitions accelerate, ports must tackle challenges related to infrastructure development, investment, and coordination with industrial stakeholders. How can infrastructure be adapted to meet the demands of new projects? What regional cooperation models should be implemented? This session will highlight the strategic role of ports as true industrial platforms for the offshore energy transition.
